Become a Data Journalist to Become a Data Scientist

I am an aspiring data scientist and have been hunting for projects and internships to gain experience and hone my skills while doing so. The issue however is that while everyone wants a data scientist, very few people want to train one and hence the story changes if your status is “going to be a data scientist soon…”. I therefore started doing some research on my own and have commenced writing about what I learn and what I research. The experience has been nice so far on two counts, firstly I am gaining valuable insights into the data I collect/research which is from diverse fields and secondly my analytical skills are improving.

The idea then struck me, that becoming a Data Journalist is really interesting as it involves data and its analysis, something that a data science is in it for in the first place, it helps to build up ones portfolio and come to think of it, it’s a really cool job. A lot of people who have data journalism either by maintaining a blog, making youtube videos, posing/writing articles or by doing something similar, like Dr Hans Rosling, David McCandless and Ben Wellington are now well know personalities.
